Mario Kart 8: Custom Track Tutorial

    We can finally make our own custom tracks for Mario Kart 8! Nearly everything can be edited and it's up to the community to finally start more track creation. This tutorial is pretty big as it took about a week of research and testing to put together. With that being said, lets get straight to how these are done! If you are familiar with MKWii course making, then this is very similar and may be easier for those experienced with that game.

    A course located in content/course will contain mutiple files.

    I doubt it'll get that many meme mods for tracks as MKWII did where it was mostly just drivers.

    I don't know people will find a way, the first mods ever released for Breath of the Wild were Sonic Man and god damn Waluigi, now every website and every video i see has Waluigi in it.
    Still not saying your work here is not impresive, it is quite impresive it just i hate when people just make random mods for the lols.

    Well I ported Sonic Man for the heck of it. Smash 4 has it's fair share of meme mods too, infact it has about all of those, shrek, minecraft, ect though it's just not seen as bad as there is so much quality content being posted. MK8 might just be like that as it grows, same for botw as modding is still somewhat new for both.

    Funny thing, first smash model imports were memes too.

    Nice! Glad to see that there is a tutorial for making Mario Kart 8 Custom Tracks. It does, however, seem very involved. It also doesn't help that Wexos Toolbox may not be able to properly phase Blender's DAE file or work on either wine or mono... (may have to wait for TheKoopaKingdom to release his version, or use my Surface instead).

    On an offtopic note, I am really glad that you linked to one of Blender Guru's tutorials. His guides are very useful for people who want to do realistic renderings. His donut tutorial is very useful for absolute beginners who want to learn how to use Blender.

    I've done some testing and it does seem blender works great now for DAE importing (Used to not work awhile ago 3 or so updates ago) so max is not needed at all if users know how to bake shadows with that program.



    victormr21 actually has been working on a MK8D battle track, just needs to add bake map effects and do collision and byaml stuff.

    I need a little help, when I try to create a kcl and load the obj, it gives me Error#2015: Error while creating new plugin from file. The index was out of range exception.

    Maybe try using every file explorer for KCL, i've had more success with that.

    Yeah most Mario Kart games are basically baked with uses of vertex colors and/or bake maps. Map objects however do dynamically cast shadows as it does for the other previous ones and you can apply the effect to actual tracks but it has a few limitations and may not look the best.


    Also neat fact, the rain drops on the floor from neo bowser city is just an animated specular map texture to give that splashy puddle like effect.

    Thank you very much. Also, I applied the textures and WexosToolbox previews it just as it should look like but MK8 displays the textures completely back.

    Yeah i should note that the previewer is a bit buggy, don't really rely on it at all as it does on display correctly. It might display properly if you save, exit and reopen however but not sure.

    I mean the previewer displays it properly but MK8 doesn't.

    Might be the bake map. Did you make one for the track or use a preset one?
